100K Poets for Change at the Green Salon Sept 22

This month, The Green Salon merges with the annual, world-wide cultural event promoting peace, equal rights, and ecology, 100k Poets for Change.  As usual, the salon will include fine art, live music, poetry reading and an open mic… but this month also features political discourse on sustainability, poetry and prose writing workshops, a full-length feature film, and a small art fair.  Vintage political t-shirts will be available at the marketplace.

    The Green Salon

Since its founding in 2011, 100k Poets for Change has been working with poets, artists, musicians, and other creatives to organize events around the world for serious social change.  The Green Salon has collaborated with 100k Poets from the beginning.

Come meet the Mayor of Downey, Sean Ashton, and speak with him about the upcoming mid-term elections.  He is a staunch supporter of civil rights and will share his thoughts on the current political climate with us.

The salon begins early, 5pm, with writing workshops hosted by ZZyZx WriterZ, Ivan Rios, and a poetry/craft workshop by Terry Walker and Frank Kearns.  There will also be the opportunity to have your writing critiqued.  Be inspired, hone your skills, and share your work at the open mic.

The featured musician for the event is Richard Torres.  He is a composer of atmospheric, Zen-like music regularly performing at cultural events such as the Green Salonand the Lotus Festival, hosted by the City of Los Angeles.  He will perform throughout the day, often on rarely-known musical instruments.

The featured poet is Sarah Thursday.  Her new book, Conversations with Gravel, is a highly-praised mosaic of love poems which she will perform.  Copies will be available for purchase and autographing.

There will also be a table of vintage classic books for sale.  Most of those authors, however, will not be available to autograph their work.

The evening will include a full-length feature film on world humanity projected under the stars.  It is an engaging story not to be missed.

City of Downey Mayor Sean Ashton

The Green Salon is the longest-running monthly cultural event in the Downey area.  It is the fourth Saturday of the month and it is always free.

Because of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the Winter Solstice, this is the last salon of the year –everyone will be occupied with parties in the following months.  Once again, The Green Salon will be held at the art studio of Roy Anthony Shabla.  He will display Halloween paintings for the event.

  • Poetry Workshop Wednesday Jan 22

    Poetry Workshop Wednesday Jan 22

Lorine Parks, curator of the Poetry Matters open mic and poetry series, is now presenting an evening of interactive discussion about the art of poetry, and will be helping a class of 8 students with their work. Participation is first come, first serve, but anyone is welcome to audit the class and listen in.

Parks describes the event as follows, “Come and join in the world-wide celebration of the Birthday of Robert Burns and see how a poor country boy made good in spite of having ESL problems. Starting with just one red rose, and using the poet’s tools of metaphor and hyperbole, we’ll see how he created the most famous simile in literature. Plus we’ll write a praise poem and as much more as time allows.”

Wednesday January 22, 7PM at Stay Gallery, 11140 Downey Ave, Downey, CA 90241. Sign-ups and inquiries at lorine@www.downeyarts.org.

TAG  EXISTS TO ENCOURAGE THE YOUNG AND YOUNG AT HEART TO FIND FULFILLMENT IN ART

Saturday, September 14, 2013 TAG and DAL will meet at Progress Park Plaza, 15500 Downey Ave., Paramount, CA. between Somerset and Alondra Blvd’s.  Board Meeting at 1:00P.M. and General meeting and demonstration at 2:00 P.M.

    Guest Demonstrator – Linda Lee

Linda,  a California girl, began her career very early in life, for her mother recalls that “even as a tot she always had a pencil in her hand.”  Because of her early and very special talent, Linda has made it her life’s work to share her art with others.  Well known for her incredible energy and zest for living, Linda found time on her way up the artistic ladder to become a nutritionist, a cosmetologist, and even a three time beauty contest winner.

Through the years Linda developed her abilities in many mediums, both in commercial and in fine art.  As art director of various publications, offices and organizations, she gained valuable leadership experience.  Then, in the privacy of her own studio where she taught herself to paint, Linda developed her unique, innovative, easy to follow painting style that has earned her the recognition she now holds as one of America’s top art instructors.  Her success stems from a sincere desire to show others how a  step-by-step approach is very effective.  Linda, known as a master colorist, emphasizes the importance of color mixing and achieves the vibrant glow of color in paintings.  There is much more about Linda, which will be available in print at the meeting.

Linda has a busy schedule.  She has one day workshops, she teaches both Oil and Watercolor classes and is in popular demand as a juror and demonstrator.

  • Mitchell de Jarnett: How Public Art Ruined My Life – June 25

Mitchell de Jarnett: How Public Art Ruined My Life – June 25

The “View from the Edge” lecture series on modern art welcomes designer and public artist Mitchell de Jarnett to a free lecture this Thursday, “How Public Art Ruined My Life.”  6:30PM at the Downey City Library (11121 Brookshire Ave, 90241).

Downey has had a rocky relationship with its 7-year-old “Arts in Public Places” ordinance, which has funded a handful of things, such as memorials to the Police and Veterans outside of city hall, as well as murals around town on utility boxes and the front of the Avenue Theatre.  Funds have also been used to help Stay Gallery on Downey Avenue open its doors to become a community arts & culture hub.

De Jarnett is a veteran of the public art scene.  He designed, along with his artist partner Lita Albuquerque the largest, most expensive piece of public art that has ever been commissioned by the State of California.  Located outside the State Capitol building in Sacramento, “Golden State” is a walking exhibition through the history of gold, science and astrophysics, and is visually combined with the history of California in a two block long permanent installation. The project completed without much fanfare because then governor Gray Davis was in the midst of a recall election.

Mitchell De Jarnett graduated from the California State University, Long Beach School of Fine Arts and the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He has practiced in the USA, France, Germany, India, and Egypt where he managed the design of the interiors for the Library of Alexandria for Snohetta Architects. His current practice spans multiple design fields including new media, public art, and architectural design. He has recently completed construction of a large public plaza / environmental artwork (with partner, artist Lita Albuquerque) at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Grand Central Art Forum. He has taught at SCI-Arc, Otis College of Art and Design, UCLA, and the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona.

“View From the Edge” is curated by Roy Anthony Shabla and co-sponsored by the Downey Museum of Art.  This is a free lecture provided to the community by the Downey Arts Coalition.  A salon is held afterward at a private home, which attendees are welcome to attend.

Art lovers are also welcome to “View From the Edge TV Night” at Casa La Reina (home of curator Roy Anthony Shabla), Tuesday night the 25th at 6:30PM, for a relaxed evening screening of the film “Pollack” about abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollack.  For more information or directions on either event, email roy@www.downeyarts.org.
