  • Thursday Night Poetry Presents Frank Kearns – Feb. 28, 2013

Thursday Night Poetry Presents Frank Kearns – Feb. 28, 2013

Downey Arts Coalition Presents “Third Thursday Poetry” BUT it’s on the FOURTH Thursday, February 28 at Stay Gallery, 11140 Downey Avenue in downtown Downey, just north of Firestone Blvd.

Doors open at 7 pm Open Mike at 7:30 pm.  Poets invited to read a poem or two.

Frank Kearns, our featured poet is launching his new chapbook, “Circling Venice.” His book shows a private life revealed in quick snapshots that mirror adolescent America’s mythic migration westward in the 70’s. His long time West Coast home differs from the places where he began, changed by one simple act of will: “Cars were the way out…I started the car.”

Kearns writes with a laconic Yankee directness of his journey, and in his orbiting perspective he gives us stops in time and stops in places. “Always the woods,” he says of his New England childhood, “hilly, laced with decaying stone walls, glades of sunshine, pockets of cool cool dark.” Once in the Venice of “the people’s parks and food co-ops,” the unexpected courtship of a muse illuminates his poems.

Frank Kearns was raised in New England. He has been transformed into a Southern Californian by time in Venice, years at the Bethlehem Steel mill in Vernon, and a long career in the aerospace industry. He lives and writes in Downey, California.

The Downey Art League and Downey Arts Coalition present an artist workshop by Roy Anthony Shabla on Tuesday evening, February 26, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Meet at Rio San Gabriel Park in the Activity Room.

This is an exciting opportunity to experience the techniques of artist Roy Anthony Shabla, who is arguably one of the most unique artists in Downey’s borders.  His paintings are often large format abstract expressionism, exploring various pour techniques, texture and color combinations to a powerful effect.  Also a poet and an author in his own right, he has been an active part of the Downey Arts movement, volunteering as a curator and organizer of local arts and poetry events.

All are welcome. No charge to attend. Plenty of free parking.

  • Volunteers Needed for Downey Homeless Count

Tues-Thurs Jan 29-31 @ Downey Moravian Church, 10337 Old River School Rd.
Downey has long needed to spend some time researching the homeless of our city in order to find ways to help those in need.  Downey has its own homeless survey being coordinated in cooperation with the Los Angeles Housing Services Authority (LAHSA) and the 100,000 Homes Campaign.
The goal of Downey Registry Week is to create a by-name registry of people living on our streets, enabling us to prioritize those who have been out there the longest and who are the most vulnerable.  On the first night, we’ll count individual homeless neighbors. Then, we’ll survey individuals during the evening hours for the next two consecutive nights. The survey findings will then be presented to the community at the conclusion of Downey’s Registry Week on February 2.
The Downey Arts Coalition is also recruiting photographers and videographers to join the teams as they go out into the community, to help document the process (with sensitivity toward privacy).
Learn more at the Facebook page “Downey Counts”
Sign up to volunteer at this link, choose the team “Downey Counts”
NOTE: Volunteers need to commit to all three nights (29, 30, 31) and will need to bring their cameras and flashlights.

  • Music Preview for Symphony’s “Simple Pleasures”

Music Preview for Symphony’s “Simple Pleasures”

Saturday night, January 26 at 8PM is the winter concert for the Downey Symphony Orchestra, “Simple Pleasures.”  Music director Sharon Lavery puts a lot of thought into her programs, and recruits exciting new soloists to experience, this one featuring the young trumpet prodigy, Conrad Jones.

If you haven’t done your musical research yet, perhaps we can help.  The names of symphonic works can often be hard to decode, but there is help out there.  YouTube is a good resource to preview a musical piece to get prepared for the live experience.  The more you listen, the more you are able to absorb all of the complex elements that go into a symphonic piece, improving the listening experience each time.

Here below is your musical tour, with links to read as you listen.  The pieces range across centuries of different musical movements.

Quiet City by Aaron Copeland: (Music for the 1939 play by Irwin Shaw) Listen on YouTube, Read about Copeland, About the composition

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Johann Baptist Georg Neruda:  Listen on YouTube, Read about Neruda, What’s a Concerto?
