  • Pieces of Her, a new theatre work at Stay Gallery June 28-29

Pieces of Her, a new theatre work at Stay Gallery June 28-29

“Pieces of Her” is a collaborative theater piece featuring an ensemble of women focusing on the female experience.  This debut project plays June 27 and 28th at Stay Gallery, 8PM.

Poetry, Spoken word, monologues, dance, movement, and music serve as storytelling instruments as we touch on everything from love, relationships, body image, sexuality, monumental life experiences and everything in between.

The piece was born out of Jesse Schiffmacher’s desire to combine her passion for women’s studies and the arts. She asked artists and writers of all genders to submit poetry, monologues, and music pieces that came out of their experiences as, or with, women.

“Pieces of Her” lives in the place where activism and art meet. It is a unique show that deals specifically with the female narrative. The goal is not only to entertain but to begin a dialogue. We ask the audience to be unafraid to explore topics that may seem controversial, trivial, or “over-discussed”.

The show is for anyone with an open heart and an open-mind. (Note: Some subject matter may not be suitable for young children)

Will run for two consecutive nights. Seating is limited. Visit Stay Gallery to purchase tickets ($10).

    Starring:
    – Jesse Schiffmacher
    – Amanda Petrocelly
    – Krystin Bergamasco

  • Babbel – A sound+art installation by Roy Anthony Shabla

Babbel – A sound+art installation by Roy Anthony Shabla

    The Sound of the Future

Saturday January 25th at Stay Gallery

The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other major art institutions in both the United States and Europe featured exhibits of sound-art this past year and are launching new sound exhibitions this coming year.  Digital media artforms have a strong foothold in every major modern art collection in the world today and sound-art is now coming into its own appreciation.

Dating back to the early twentieth century and gaining prominence in the 1950s, sound-art is the product of many well-known artists – Salvador Dali, John Cage, Yve Klein – as well as many great artists whose names are not a part of the household vernacular.

Decidedly avant garde, sound-art/noise art/new music has survived this hundred-plus years on commissions by a small, sophisticated community but with exhibitions mounted by major institutions worldwide, its audience is growing to include the general public.

And soon, it will include Downey.

RoyWorkshop_10Roy Anthony Shabla has been creating and exhibiting sound-art since he was a teenager and two years ago, his collaboration with architect, Nader Ghassemlou, was a sensation at the Long Beach Sound Walk, one of the most important sound-art festivals in the world.  Now 28, Downey’s favorite son will offer sound-art to his hometown.

Author of twelve books –eight of which are poetry– and painter of large, elegant abstracts, Shabla is a career artist whose work is held in private collections across the United States.  While having great interest in digital art, he does not watch television, own a Smart Phone, or “Twitter” and if he makes up his mind one day he says he will follow what this site suggests.  Yet his short film, i am the president (the soundtrack of which is a Deconstructed poem), showed at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art last year, gaining rave reviews.  He hopes to show there again soon.

In a recent interview, Shabla said:  “We live in a society with more, faster, better ways to communicate but have lost the art of conversation.  We are losing the actual ability to communicate primarily because we have nothing to say.  This is the result of television.”

conversationsShabla’s chapbook, conversations, is about this phenomenon.

“Stay Gallery, where I will be performing, is located in downtown Downey.  One block away, in the very heart of the city, are a series of restaurants and bars that host more televisions than an appliance store.  The newest eatery –an “elegant” steak house— boasts a décor of over fifty tvs.  How will you have a conversation (or digestion) in a place like that?  They should serve Salisbury steak on compartmentalized foil plates because what they are offering are tv dinners.”

    Does he really boycott television?

“When I visit my mother on Sunday, we watch a movie. Did you know that cable tv has commercials? You pay to watch the television and the television is trying to sell you something.  Someone here was a genius about making money.  The programming (it’s the perfect word for it) is merely a rouse to get you to watch/listen to the sales pitch.  Some programming, like the news, is the sales pitch…  Of course, I see bits of tv here and there but generally, I have no interest in it.  I have been sold on too much already.”

“People spend their days at a mind-numbing job then go home and want to numb their minds with television and alcohol.  Creativity is beaten out of them.  And it creates a hopelessness that permeates our society.”

“All my artwork, my poetry, my paintings, my sound-art –whatever— are always giving the opportunity for depth.  I have taught meditation since before you were born and that aspect of long-term meditation is reflected in my work.  Practitioners of Zen meditation understand my art.”

Over two years in the making, his sound-art performance, babbel, is an intense aural experience incorporating Deconstructionist poetry translated into more than fifty languages –including Esperanto, the universal language.  The effect is a transcendent barrage of sound that will, Shabla says, liberate your brain.

Deconstructionism is primarily a literary artform whereby information/meaning is gathered by “deconstructing” the words and/or sentences of a piece of literature.  Or the literature itself can be written in Deconstructed forms, revealing meaning through its structure.  The result is an understanding of the work that transcends the words themselves and creates bridging neural pathways in the brain of the reader/audience.  In short, Shabla’s work is said to make you more creative.

As a painter, Shabla works with the idea of altering brain function through layers of color; as a sound artist, he works with altering brain function through layers of sound –in this case, the spoken word.  It is an extension of his poetry.

“The story of the Tower of Babbel is the story of how we relearn to communicate with each other.  It does not need to be seen as a prehistoric account of the generation of the multitude of languages but can be viewed as a very contemporary account of the basic art of conversation and intimacy.”  As stated, Shabla feels that with the new, digital formats for communicate, the art of conversation, the art of letter-writing, the friendly art of debate seem soon to be lost.  “And we need, today more than ever, to relearn how to communicate.”

    “Sup?”  will not suffice.

World-premiering at Stay Gallery in Downey, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, babbel will consist of both live and recorded sound. As with many sound artists, Shabla created babbel to be adaptable to different sites and audiences and this first showing will include performers.  He would be just as pleased to have the digital recordings play in a stark room.  Performing live are fellow artists Alexander Vogel, Isaac Takeuchi, Terry Walker, Steven Armenta, Lana Joy, Nick Holder, and Gabriel Armenta

Saxophone, cello, and five voices, plus four different hour-long cds playing simultaneously, make up the majority of the performance.  That which begins as cacophony soon degenerates into sublime vibrations that allow the brain to transcend logic. “You will hear music and singing that isn’t part of the performance.  Then, as the sound washes over the brain and reserves are released, language returns and words are deciphered that, also, are not part of the performance.  In some ways, babbel is a conversation with the Divine.”

One hour and fifteen minutes, babbel is offered at Stay Gallery on Saturday evening, January 25th, at 8pm.  Advance tickets are $6 from the Stay Gallery website, stay-gallery.com.  For more information, go to RoyAnthonyShabla.com.

Defying Gravity featured on KPCC 89.3

Downey’s space history had the privilege of being featured this morning on our local NPR radio station, KPCC 89.3.  The play Defying Gravity, which opens tonight at the Columbia Memorial Space Center provides a frame story for how Downey’s space programs shaped the city in both its heyday as well as the loss of the Rockwell plant in 1999.  Science reporter Sanden Totten interviewed Mayor Mario Guerra, Coucilman Roger Brossmer, directors Andrew Wahlquist and Lana Joy, as well as visited a rehearsal of the play.

There is also a full photo gallery of the space center, and one of the play’s rehearsals.

  • Defying Gravity, a Play at the Columbia Memorial Space Center Sept 20-22

Defying Gravity, a Play at the Columbia Memorial Space Center Sept 20-22

The Downey Arts Coalition, in partnership with the City of Downey and the Aerospace Legacy Foundation, is proud to announce a unique weekend of live theater under the stars this September at the outdoor amphitheater of the Columbia Memorial Space Center.

Columbia Memorial Space CenterFor three nights, we will be presenting a fully staged production of Defying Gravity by Jane Anderson, a compelling play about the Challenger space shuttle tragedy.

    Friday & Saturday September 20, 21 at 8 PM, Sunday September 22 at 7PM.

Tickets are $20 ($15 students with student ID).

The Columbia Memorial Space Center was built by the City of Downey as a monument to the efforts of ordinary men and women who played a major role in the success of the US space program through their work at North American Aviation (and later Rockwell) in the 1960’s and 70’s. This play is a family event that will allow all generations to come together to experience and contemplate a pivotal chapter in aerospace history.

Through this effort, we hope to inspire greater awareness and support for the Space Center, and its goal of building a permanent home for the full-size shuttle mock-up Inspiration as an educational exhibit for both students and adults.

challenger-disaster-myths-explosion_31734_600x450Defying Gravity explores the emotional core of the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle disaster, artfully weaving together the lives of participants and bystanders.  The civilian teacher leads us through the excitement of the opportunity before her, juxtaposed with the deeply felt grief of her daughter, balanced with the bold aspirations of elderly tourists who drive to watch the launch, the guilt felt by a NASA mechanic, and even the parallels drawn from Painter Claude Monet’s artistic quest.  The play explores our need to reach beyond ourselves and dare the universe.

There is no greater venue for this play about human dreams and endeavors. One of the Apollo capsules sits out in front of the center and the shuttle mock-up Inspiration is on display across the street.  The outdoor performances under the stars underscore the themes of the play, and the human drive to question and explore.  The Columbia Memorial Space Center is one of the designated venues for touring Smithsonian exhibits because of the caliber of its exhibits and programs.

The show will be a moving, engaging, entertaining, and educational experience not to be missed.  Aerospace professionals and retirees will experience their memories of the drama alongside the fresh eyes of a new generation that was born after the tragedy took place.  With a set by theatre designer Geronimo Guzman, multimedia projection of images and video, theatrical lighting and sound, it is sure to be an evening not to miss.

CMSC_5_EditedAndrew Wahlquist and Lana Joy Wahlquist are directing and producing the show, as a project of the Downey Arts Coalition, which they organized out of a love for their hometown and a desire to see the community come together with a renewed passion for the arts.  Andrew is a filmmaker working in the post-production industry, and Lana Joy has worked in the world of professional theater as an actor, director, and college professor.  Since its founding in 2012, the Downey Arts Coalition has grown in membership and audience attendance as it sponsors an increasing variety of local art events.

2013-14 Season. The city provides these concert opportunities to the local community to bring quality shows to our beautiful 738 seat theater.

    Press release to follow:

Experience the performing arts at the Downey Civic Theatre where incredible things are happening! The Downey Civic Theatre is proud to announce another exciting season of national touring artists.

20130730-175013.jpgOn Tuesday September 24th, 2013 at 8pm “The Hungarian Folk Ensemble”, regarded as one of the greatest folkloric dance ensembles in the world, will perform at the Downey Civic Theatre. The Ensemble has performed in 44 countries across four continents and won the admiration of all audiences. Their rich and colorful repertoire entitles the Ensemble to be regarded as one of the top touring groups in the world. As a musical genre, the rhapsody is characterized by its tumultuous rhythms, strong emotion, impassioned surges of thought, and freedom of expression. It’s forceful, tasteful, glorified presentation of ethnic expression you don’t want to miss!

20130730-175221.jpgGrammy Award winning American jazz singer “Al Jarreau” will light up the stage on Saturday October 12th, 2013 at 8pm. Al Jarreau’s unique vocal style is one of the world’s most precious treasures. His innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed performers of our time with seven Grammy Awards, scores of international music awards and popular accolades worldwide. Album hits including “Look to the Rainbow”, “All Fly Home” and Breakin’ Away, cemented him as an international superstar.

20130730-175241.jpgThe Pacific Mambo Orchestra featuring Tito Puente, Jr. will perform live in concert on Sunday November 10th, 2013 at 8pm. Tito Puente, Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. He has captive audiences who echo his passion in performing arts centers, symphony halls and jazz festivals worldwide, with a high voltage celebration that takes place on stage. A new and exciting “big band”, The Pacific Mambo Orchestra has a sparkling rhythm section and bristles with energy, making it one of the best current Latin Big Band Orchestras in the world.

20130730-175258.jpg“The Russian Ballet Theatre” creates a beautiful and elegant display of classic fairy tale of “Sleeping Beauty” with a blaze of color, grace and fluidity on Saturday February 15th, 2104 at 8pm. With over 50 dancers, many of whom have been with the company since its inception, the Russian Ballet Theatre will perform a repertoire that is often considered the finest achievement of the Classical Ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lends itself perfectly to the full evening ballet that was Petipa’s pride.
